[Review] Mathewson, R.L. – Fire & Brimstone (Neighbor From Hell # 8)

Description:
What happens when a Bradford with questionable OCD, a temper and a reputation for making his employees cry falls for the woman that refuses to accept the fact that he’s fired her and was terrifyingly more of a Bradford than he was?

Well, we can’t share that here, because it would be seriously inappropriate, but we’re sure that you can see where this is leading…

To the altar or a stint in the slammer, either one is possible when it comes to the Neighbor from Hell Series.

My Thoughts:

[Review] Maise, Ella – To Hate Adam Connor

About the author:
Ella loves nothing more than to escape real life to find those very few magical moments in a book. She loves how it has the power of stealing your worries away, putting a smile on your face, and of course sometimes making you crush on fictional characters. If she can manage to do even one of those things for a reader, she will be a happy writer. Ella Maise, an avid reader and a big dreamer, is the author of To Love Jason Thorn, I'm Yours, and the Alexander & Maya series.

Description:
So you may ask, who is Adam Connor? He is the recently divorced, Academy Award-winning actor who just moved in next door with his kid. He also happens to be an exquisite male specimen and the most infuriating sly bastard I’ve ever come across.

Let’s be honest here, wouldn’t you wanna take a peek over the wall to catch a glimpse of him, hopefully when he is naked? Wouldn’t you melt away after watching him work out as his five-year-old kid cheered him on? Do I even have to mention those abs, the big bulge in his pants, or that arm porn? Oh, wait, you would never spy on him? Sure…

While I was being thoughtful by not breaking and entering and was actually considering going over to offer him a shoulder—or maybe a boob or two—to cry on (y’know, because of his divorce), instead he had me thrown in jail after a small incident. Jail, people! He was supposed to grant me countless orgasms as a thank you, not a jail cell.

After that day, I was mentally plotting ways to strangle him instead of jumping his bones to make sweet love. So what if my body did more than just shiver when he whispered dirty little things in my ear? I can’t be held responsible for that. And when was the last time he’d kissed anyone anyway? Who’d enjoy a kiss with a side of heart attack?

Even if he and his son were the best things since sliced bread—and I’m not saying he was—I couldn’t fall for him. No matter what promises he whispered on my skin, my curse wouldn’t let us be. I wasn’t a damsel in distress—I could save myself, thank you very much—but deep inside, I still hoped Adam Connor would be the hero of my story.

My Thoughts:
Nachdem mir "To Love Jason Thorn" so gut gefallen hatte, war klar, dass ich um eine so verführerische Geschichte wie "To Hate Adam Connor" nicht lange herumschleichen werde. Und zack, so war es auch.

[Review] Maise, Ella – To Love Jason Thorn

About the author:
Ella loves nothing more than to escape real life to find those very few magical moments in a book. She loves how it has the power of stealing your worries away, putting a smile on your face, and of course sometimes making you crush on fictional characters. If she can manage to do even one of those things for a reader, she will be a happy writer. Ella Maise, an avid reader and a big dreamer, is the author of To Love Jason Thorn, I'm Yours, and the Alexander & Maya series.

Description:
Jason Thorn... My brother's childhood friend.

Oh, how stupidly in love with that boy I was. He was the first boy that made me blush, my first official crush. Sounds beautiful so far, right? That excitement that bubbles up inside you, those famous butterflies you feel for the very first time--he was the reason for them all. But, you only get to live in that fairytale world until they crush your hopes and dreams and then stomp on your heart for good measure. And boy did he crush my little heart into pieces.

After the stomping part he became the boy I did my best to stay away from--and let me tell you, it was pretty hard to do when he slept in the room right across from mine.
When tragedy struck his family and they moved away, I was ready to forget he ever existed.

Now he is a movie star, the one who makes women of all ages go into a screaming frenzy, the one who makes everyone swoon with that dimpled smile of his. Do you think that's dreamy? I certainly don't think so. How about me coming face to face with him? Nope still not dreamy. Not when I can't even manage to look him in the eye.

Me? I'm Olive, a new writer. Actually, I'm THE writer of the book that inspired the movie he is about to star in on the big screen. As of late, I am also referred to as the oh-so-very-lucky girl who is about to become the wife of Jason Thorn.

Maybe you're thinking yet again that this is all so dreamy? Nope, nothing dreamy going on here. Not even close.

My Thoughts:
"To Love Jason Thorn" hat mich sofort angesprochen, als ich die Beschreibung zu dem Buch gelesen habe. Irgendwie fand ich die Mischung aus frischgebackener Autorin und berühmten Filmstar, den sie aus Kindertagen kennt, liebt und der in ihrer Geschichte den Protagonisten spielen soll, richtig ansprechend und hatte auch dementsprechend große Erwartungen in das Buch gesetzt.

[Review] Clare, Cassandra – Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices #1)

About the author:
Cassandra Clare is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Mortal Instruments series and the Infernal Devices trilogy. She was born overseas and spent her early years travelling around the world with her family and several trunks of books. Cassandra lives in western Massachusetts with her husband, their cats, and these days, even more books.

Description:
Emma Carstairs is a warrior, a Shadowhunter. She lives for battle. Alongside her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, she patrols Los Angeles, where vampires party on the Sunset Strip, and faeries – the most powerful of supernatural creatures – teeter on the edge of war with Shadowhunters. When the bodies of humans and faeries are found murdered in the same way Emma’s parents were when she was a child, an uneasy alliance is formed. This is Emma’s chance for revenge and Julian’s chance to get back his brother Mark, who is being held by the faerie Courts. All they have to do is solve the murders within two weeks… and before the murderer targets them.
Their search takes Emma from sea caves full of sorcery to a dark lottery where death is dispensed. And each clue she unravels uncovers more secrets. What has Julian been hiding from her all these years? Why does Shadowhunter Law forbid parabatai to fall in love? Who really killed her parents – and can she bear to know the truth?

My Thoughts:

[Review] Clare, Cassandra – City of Heavenly Fire (The Mortal Instruments # 6)

About the author:
Cassandra Clare is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Mortal Instruments series and the Infernal Devices trilogy. She was born overseas and spent her early years travelling around the world with her family and several trunks of books. Cassandra lives in western Massachusetts with her husband, their cats, and these days, even more books.

Description:
In this dazzling and long-awaited conclusion to the acclaimed Mortal Instruments series. Clary and her friends fight the greatest evil they have ever faced: Clary’s own brother.

The embattled Shadowhunters withdraw to Idris – but not even the famed demon towers of Alicante can keep Sebastian at bay. And with the Nephilim trapped in Idris, who will guard the world against demons?
When one of the greatest betrayals the Nephilim have ever known is revealed, Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Simon, and Alec must flee – even if their journey takes them deep into the demon realms, where no Shadowhunter has set foot before, and from which no human being has ever returned…
Love will be sacrificed and lives lost in the terrible battle for the fate of the world in the thrilling final instalment of the classic urban fantasy series The Mortal Instruments.

My Thoughts:
"City of Heavenly Fire" ist der letzte, heiß ersehnte und gleichzeitig gefürchtete Abschluss der Mortal Instruments Serie um Clary, Jace & Co. Und wie mit jedem Abschlussband kann man es einfach nicht jedem Leser recht machen.

[Review] Clare, Cassandra – City of Lost Souls (The Mortal Instruments # 5)

About the author:
Cassandra Clare is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Mortal Instruments series and the Infernal Devices trilogy. She was born overseas and spent her early years travelling around the world with her family and several trunks of books. Cassandra lives in western Massachusetts with her husband, their cats, and these days, even more books.

Description:
The demon Lilith has been destroyed and Jace freed from captivity. But when the Shadowhunters arrive, they find only blood and broken glass. Not only is the boy Clary loves missing, so is the boy she hates: her brother Sebastian, who is determined to bring the Shadowhunters to their knees.
The Clave’s magic cannot locate either boy, but Jace can’t stay away from Clary. When they meet again Clary discovers the horror Lilith’s magic has wrought – Jace and Sebastian are now bound to each other, and Jace has become a servant of evil. The Clave is determined to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other.
Only a few people believe that Jace can still be saved. Together, Alec, Magnus, Simon, and Isabelle bargain with the sinister Seelie Queen, contemplate deals with demons, and turn at last to the merciless, weapon-making Iron Sisters, who might be able to forge a weapon that can sever the bond between Sebastian and Jace. If the Iron Sisters can’t help, their only hope is to challenge Heaven and Hell – a risk that could claim their lives.
And they must do it without Clary. For Clary is playing a dangerous game utterly alone. The price of losing is not just her own life, but Jace’s soul. She’s willing to do anything for Jace, but can she still trust him? Or is he truly lost? What price is too high to pay, even for love?

My Thoughts:

[Review] Clare, Cassandra – City of Fallen Angels (The Mortal Instruments # 4)

About the author:
Cassandra Clare is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Mortal Instruments series and the Infernal Devices trilogy. She was born overseas and spent her early years travelling around the world with her family and several trunks of books. Cassandra lives in western Massachusetts with her husband, their cats, and these days, even more books.

Description:
The Mortal War is over, and Clary Fray is back home in New York, excited about all the possibilities before her. She’s training to become a Shadowhunter and to use her unique power. Her mother is getting married to the love of her life. Downworlders and Shadowhunters are at peace at last. And – most important of all – Clary can finally call Jace her boyfriend.
But nothing comes without a price.
Someone is murdering the Shadowhunters who used to be in Valentine’s Circle, provoking tensions between Downworlders and Shadowhunters that could lead to a second bloody war. Clary’s best friend, Simon, can’t help her. His mother just found out that he’s vampire and now he’s homeless. Everywhere he turns, someone wants him on their side – along with the power of the curse that’s wrecking his life. And they’re willing to do anything to get what they want. At the same time he’s dating two beautiful, dangerous girls – neither of whom knows about the other.
When Jace begins to pull away from Clary without explaining why, she is forced to delve into the heart of a mystery whose solution reveals her worst nightmare: She herself has set in motion a terrible chain of events that could lead to her losing everything she loves. Even Jace.

My Thoughts:

[Review] Kane, Stacia – Chasing Magic (Donwside Ghosts #5)

About the author:
Stacia Kane has been a phone psychic, a customer service representative, a bartender, and a movie theatre usher, and she thinks that writing is more fun than all of them combined. She wears a lot of black, still makes great cocktails, likes to play music loud in the car, and thinks Die Hard is one of the greatest movies ever made. She believes in dragons and the divine right of kings, and is a fervent Ricardian. She lives outside Atlanta with her husband and their two little girls.

Description:
A DEADLY HIGH

Magic-wielding Churchwitch and secret addict Chess Putnam knows better than anyone just how high a price people are willing to pay for a chemical rush. But when someone with money to burn and a penchant for black magic starts tampering with Downside’s drug supply, Chess realizes that the unlucky customers are paying with their souls—and taking the innocent with them, as the magic-infused speed compels them to kill in the most gruesome ways possible.

As if the streets weren’t scary enough, the looming war between the two men in her life explodes, taking even more casualties and putting Chess squarely in the middle. Downside could become a literal ghost town if Chess doesn’t find a way to stop both the war and the dark wave of death-magic, and the only way to do that is to use both her addiction and her power to enter the spell and chase the magic all the way back to its malevolent source. Too bad that doing so will probably kill Chess—if the war doesn’t first destroy the man who’s become her reason for living.

My Thoughts:

[Review] Kane, Stacia – Sacrificial Magic (Downside Ghosts #4)

About the author:
Stacia Kane has been a phone psychic, a customer service representative, a bartender, and a movie theatre usher, and she thinks that writing is more fun than all of them combined. She wears a lot of black, still makes great cocktails, likes to play music loud in the car, and thinks Die Hard is one of the greatest movies ever made. She believes in dragons and the divine right of kings, and is a fervent Ricardian. She lives outside Atlanta with her husband and their two little girls.

Description:
READING, WRITING, AND RAISING THE DEAD

When Chess Putnam is ordered by an infamous crime boss — who also happens to be her drug dealer — to use her powers as a witch to solve a grisly murder involving dark magic, she knows she must rise to the challenge. Adding to the intensity: Chess’s boyfriend, Terrible, doesn’t trust her, and Lex, the son of a rival crime lord, is trying to reignite the sparks between him and Chess.

Plus there’s the little matter of Chess’s real job as a ghost hunter for the Church of Real Truth, investigating reports of a haunting at a school in the heart of Downside. Someone seems to be taking a crash course in summoning the dead—and if Chess doesn’t watch her back, she may soon be joining their ranks.

As Chess is drawn into a shadowy world of twisted secrets and dark violence, it soon becomes clear that she’s not going to emerge from its depths without making the ultimate sacrifice.

My Thoughts:

[Review] Kane, Stacia – City of Ghosts (Downside Ghosts #3)

About the author:
Stacia Kane has been a phone psychic, a customer service representative, a bartender, and a movie theatre usher, and she thinks that writing is more fun than all of them combined. She wears a lot of black, still makes great cocktails, likes to play music loud in the car, and thinks Die Hard is one of the greatest movies ever made. She believes in dragons and the divine right of kings, and is a fervent Ricardian. She lives outside Atlanta with her husband and their two little girls.

Description:
IT’S A THIN LINE BETWEEN ALIVE AND UNDEAD.

Chess Putnam has a lot on her plate. Mangled human corpses have started to show up on the streets of Downside, and Chess’s bosses at the Church of Real Truth have ordered her to team up with the ultra-powerful Black Squad agency to crack the grisly case.

Chess is under a binding spell that threatens death if she talks about the investigation, but the city’s most notorious crime boss — and Chess’s drug dealer — gets wind of her new assignment and insists on being kept informed. If that isn’t bad enough, a sinister street vendor appears to have information Chess needs. Only he’s not telling what he knows, or what it all has to do with the vast underground City of Eternity.

Now Chess will have to navigate killer wraiths, First Elders, and a lot of seriously nasty magic — all while coping with some not-so-small issues of her own. And the only man Chess can trust to help her through it all has every reason to want her dead.

My Thoughts:

[Review] Kane, Stacia – Unholy Magic (Downside Ghosts #2)

About the author:
Stacia Kane has been a phone psychic, a customer service representative, a bartender, and a movie theatre usher, and she thinks that writing is more fun than all of them combined. She wears a lot of black, still makes great cocktails, likes to play music loud in the car, and thinks Die Hard is one of the greatest movies ever made. She believes in dragons and the divine right of kings, and is a fervent Ricardian. She lives outside Atlanta with her husband and their two little girls.

Description:
ENEMIES DON’T NEED TO BE ALIVE TO BE DEADLY.

For Chess Putnam, finding herself near-fatally poisoned by a con psychic and then stopping a murderous ghost is just another day on the job. As an agent of the Church of Real Truth, Chess must expose those looking to profit from the world’s unpleasant little poltergeist problem—humans filing false claims of hauntings—all while staving off any undead who really are looking for a kill. But Chess has been extra busy these days, coping with a new “celebrity” assignment while trying on her own time to help some desperate prostitutes.

Someone’s taking out the hookers of Downside in the most gruesome way, and Chess is sure the rumors that it’s the work of a ghost are way off base. But proving herself right means walking in the path of a maniac, not to mention standing between the two men in her life just as they — along with their ruthless employers — are moving closer to a catastrophic showdown. Someone is dealing in murder, sex, and the supernatural, and once again Chess finds herself right in the crossfire.

My Thoughts:
"Unholy Magic", der zweite Band der Downside Ghosts Reihe, ähnelt in gewissen Aspekten – positiven wie auch kritischen – dem ersten Band sehr. Auch hier tat ich mich ungemein schwer, mir eine Meinung zu der Geschichte zu bilden. Doch leider kann ich mich hier auch wieder nur den Kritikpunkten zum Vorgängerband anschließen.

[Review] Kane, Stacia – Unholy Ghosts (Downside Ghosts #1)

About the author:
Stacia Kane has been a phone psychic, a customer service representative, a bartender, and a movie theatre usher, and she thinks that writing is more fun than all of them combined. She wears a lot of black, still makes great cocktails, likes to play music loud in the car, and thinks Die Hard is one of the greatest movies ever made. She believes in dragons and the divine right of kings, and is a fervent Ricardian. She lives outside Atlanta with her husband and their two little girls.

Description:
THE DEPARTED HAVE ARRIVED.

The world is not the way it was. The dead have risen, and the living are under attack. The powerful Church of Real Truth, in charge since the government fell, has sworn to reimburse citizens being harassed by the deceased. Enter Chess Putnam, a fully tattooed witch and freewheeling ghost hunter. She’s got a real talent for banishing the wicked dead. But Chess is keeping a dark secret: She owes a lot of money to a murderous drug lord named Bump, who wants immediate payback in form of a dangerous job that involves black magic, human sacrifice, a nefarious demonic creature, and enough wicked energy to wipe out a city of souls. Toss in lust for a rival gang leader and a dangerous attraction to Bump’s ruthless enforcer, and Chess begins to wonder if the rush is really worth it. Hell, yeah.

My Thoughts:

[Crazy Reads] Juli, August, September & Oktober 2016
